Stand Types Explained: From Close-Range Power to Automatic Stands

Every Stand in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure falls into a rough category based on how it fights: raw close-range power, long-range control, or fully automatic action. Understanding these types tells you why Star Platinum trades range for strength and why an automatic Stand like Sheer Heart Attack is so terrifying. Here is how the system works.

What a Stand Type Tells You

A Stand is the visible manifestation of a person’s fighting spirit, introduced properly in Stardust Crusaders. While every Stand is unique, fans and characters alike group them by a simple trade-off: the closer a Stand operates to its user, the more raw power and speed it tends to have; the further it can reach, the more its physical strength is diluted.

This inverse relationship between range and power is one of the most consistent rules in the series. It explains matchups at a glance — a close-range powerhouse wants to close distance, while a long-range Stand wants to keep its user hidden and safe far from the fight.

Close-Range Power Stands

Close-range Stands are the heavy hitters. They usually operate within a few metres of their user and deliver overwhelming strength, speed and precision. Jotaro’s Star Platinum and Josuke’s Crazy Diamond are the archetypes: immense punching power measured in rapid "ORA" and "DORA" barrages, but almost useless if the user is separated from them.

DIO’s The World belongs here too, sharing Star Platinum’s power ceiling and adding the ability to stop time. Giorno’s Gold Experience and Bruno’s Sticky Fingers round out the category — devastating up close, limited at distance.

Long-Range Stands

Long-range Stands sacrifice power for reach and control. Kakyoin’s Hierophant Green can stretch across a room and weave binding nets from a safe distance, and Koichi’s Echoes can plant sound effects on targets far from where Koichi is standing.

The strategic value of a long-range Stand is that the user can stay out of danger entirely. The downside is fragility: if an opponent traces the Stand back to its user, a long-range fighter is often physically defenceless.

Automatic and Autonomous Stands

Automatic Stands act on their own, following a set of rules rather than direct commands. Because the user does not need to be near — or even aware of — the fight, they are among the hardest Stands to counter. Yoshikage Kira’s Sheer Heart Attack, the second bomb of Killer Queen, relentlessly pursues the hottest target in an area with no off switch.

Other famous automatic Stands include Highway Star, which tracks a target by scent, and Notorious B.I.G., which grows stronger the more its target moves. The weakness of an automatic Stand is usually a loophole in its own rules: defeat the rule, and you defeat the Stand.

Evolving and Colony Stands

Some Stands change form over time. Act-based Stands like Koichi’s Echoes (Acts 1 through 3) and Johnny’s Tusk (Acts 1 through 4) grow more powerful as their user matures, each Act unlocking a new ability. Requiem Stands sit at the very top of this ladder: Giorno’s Gold Experience Requiem, awakened by a Stand Arrow, gains the power to nullify any action by returning it to zero.

Colony Stands are made of many small units acting together — Bad Company’s miniature army and Harvest’s swarm of tiny collectors. Individually weak, they overwhelm through sheer numbers and coordination.

Stand Types in the JoJo Games

In JOJOSDLE, a character’s Fighting Style attribute distinguishes Stand Users from Hamon Users, Spin Users, Vampires and Pillar Men. A green tile there is a powerful filter, especially for the earlier Parts where Stands do not yet exist.

In JoJo Higher or Lower, understanding Stand types helps you judge power levels. Close-range powerhouses like Star Platinum, The World and Gold Experience Requiem sit near the top of the roster, while support and utility Stands rank lower. When two unfamiliar characters appear side by side, knowing which is a raw brawler and which is a support Stand gives you a real edge.
