DIO: The Eternal Rival of the Joestars
Dio Brando is the villain who defines JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Adopted into the Joestar family as a scheming boy, he becomes a vampire with the Stone Mask, is defeated by Jonathan, and returns a century later as DIO — wielder of the time-stopping Stand The World and the greatest threat the Joestars ever face.

Dio Brando is born into poverty and cruelty, then taken in by George Joestar after Dio’s father claims to have saved his life. From the moment he enters the Joestar mansion, Dio schemes to seize the family fortune, tormenting his adoptive brother Jonathan at every turn.
Cornered by Jonathan’s Hamon and the law, Dio uses an ancient Stone Mask to transform himself into a vampire, gaining immense strength, regeneration and a hunger for blood. Their final battle destroys Jonathan’s home, and though Jonathan seemingly wins, Dio survives as a severed head — refusing, always, to die.
A Century Later: DIO Returns
A hundred years on, Dio — now styled DIO — resurfaces having stolen Jonathan Joestar’s body, fusing his vampiric head to the Joestar bloodline. This connection is what awakens Stands in the descendants of Joseph Joestar, dragging Jotaro Kujo and his companions into a journey across the world to Egypt.
DIO spends Stardust Crusaders building a loyal network of Stand Users to guard him, testing the Joestars with wave after wave of assassins as they close in on his mansion in Cairo.
The World and Time Stop
DIO’s Stand is The World, a powerful close-range humanoid nearly identical in strength and speed to Jotaro’s Star Platinum. Its signature ability is to stop time entirely: within a frozen world, DIO can move, attack and reposition while everyone else is helpless, calling out "ZA WARUDO" as time halts.
DIO can hold time still for several seconds and lengthens that window as he grows more powerful. His favourite finisher is to stop time, drop a heavy object — famously a steamroller — onto his enemy, and let time resume as it lands. Only another time-stopper stands a chance against him.
His Legacy
Though Jotaro finally defeats DIO by learning to move within stopped time himself, DIO’s influence never truly ends. His son Giorno Giovanna inherits the Joestar spirit and becomes the hero of Golden Wind, and his devoted follower Enrico Pucci carries out DIO’s ultimate plan in Stone Ocean.
DIO endures as the series’ defining antagonist because his ambition is total: not wealth or revenge, but to stand above humanity itself. His rivalry with the Joestar bloodline outlives his own body, echoing through generation after generation.
